Inspire My Prayers

A well-known Rabbi recently wrote a column addressing those that have coined the well-known adage “I am not religious, but I am spiritual”. The person who said that to the Rabbi was characterizing being religious as one who follows rituals. When it comes to religion, some people are very passionate about their apathy.

Sadly, they are not alone. There are several reasons why people shy away from being Torah observant, and all of them are based on misperceptions of the Torah or a lack of understanding of Judaism and/or life itself. Here are the top three reasons that people are disinclined to be Torah observant.

1. They don’t understand what the mitzvot are really about or why we do them.

2. They don’t want to be controlled.

3. They don’t want to feel obligated.

The first reason is usually due to a lack of proper education. A big part of that failure can be blamed on the religious education of the Jewish schools. The schools are generally excellent when it comes to conveying the ins and outs of Torah observance, but are terribly lacking in properly explaining the whys of the mitzvot. A classic of this is how davening [prayers] are taught.

Schools teach about the obligations of prayers, but very few students understand what praying is all about or why they are doing it, not to mention that they often don’t even understand the words they are saying. This has led to entire generations of Jews who pray out of habit without any deep connection to what they are doing. The only time they really concentrate on what they are saying is when they are in difficult situations, and they want something from the Almighty.

The Rav concluded with the story of a woman who said that her boss told her that he expects to be treated like a God, So now she only talks to the boss when she needs something…. That is prayer today.

For this reason and many others, the initiative of INSPIREMYPRAYERS.COM was founded. Yeshiva Pirchei Shoshanim spent years of research in developing a structure that will make our prayers come alive. Creating over 300 stickers placed in the most strategic places of the Siddur, our prayers will not Ignite like Fire.

Roadmap to Prayer..

Welcome to the Roadmap To Prayer Course!

Tefilla is perhaps the most central theme in the life of a Jew. If one stops for a moment to reflect on this, one would see that all our activities revolve around Tefilla. We daven 3 Tefillas a day. We worry about where we will be comes time for Mincha or when we travel. There is a special emphasis on Tefilla during this time of the year comes Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur

and Sukkos. There are Tefillas we say at times of joy and others at times of sorrow. We are constantly in touch and in communication with Hashem, our Creator.

There are many sefarim and books written on Prayer and we encourage you to use them as they are tremendous resources. In our lessons, you will find a unique blend of insights, background, inspirational stories, and explanations of different parts of Tefilla. Most of all, the reader will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the structure of Tefilla which our

Sages have developed for us so many years ago. This will give the reader a better understanding of what each tefilla is supposed to accomplish and how they all fit together. In the end, we pray to Hashem to grant this program success in bringing us all closer to Him and improving ourselves through the Avodah (service) of prayer. With this we begin Bezras Hashem !

Yeshiva Pirchei Shoshanim is sad to announce the sudden Petira of NAVY CHAPLAIN AND COMMANDER Naftali Kreisler, who passed away after a short illness. He leaves behind a wife and 3 young children in Cleveland, Ohio. Chaplain Kreisler was so devoted to every member of the Military and especially his Marines that he loved so much. He was the highest ranking endorsee of Yeshiva Pirchei Shoshanim to the Military. Unfortunately, his family was left with no support for his wife and 3 young children. We ask each and every member to contribute whatever they can. His heroism and the Kiddish Hashem every time he put on his Uniform and went out to battle is legendary.

He spent 3 tours in Afghanistan, ministering there to all branches of the service. In a place that was filled with dust, snakes and scorpions, he was there smiling and giving encouragement to all regardless of their religious backgrounds.
